I get asked a LOT for ideas for what to wear for a family session. The one thing I have to emphatically insist is that you DO NOT match! COORDINATE! Unless you dress the in the same outfits every day of the year, I don’t want you to match in pictures. I want to capture you, just kicked up a notch. I’m a T-shirt and jeans kind of gal. So for pictures, unless we are going dressier, I wear jeans. But instead of just a day to day t-shirt, I go get a fancy (AKA nicer than a t-shirt but still cotton and comfy) shirt, rock out some jewelry, and toss on some boots instead of my day-to-day slip ons.
If you love skirts, wear that! Dress your kids up in something that is THEM, not matching, but tying it all together. Pick a common thread. Love pink? Have pink thread through your outfits. Your girls in dresses with pink flowers, your boys with pink ties or suspenders. You could wear a cream colored top, and a pink necklace and heels- your hubby with a pink tie or shirt. Speaking of ties and all things amazingly adorable…. go check out The Belle and The Beau … painfully cute.
I wanted to include a few ideas of what I mean. These are courtesy of Inspire Me Baby, but if you like ideas on what to wear, leave a comment and I will start putting together ideas every week.

I can’t wait to see you as things get green! Spring is a fantastic time to have family portraits.

Newborns make me giddy. Like, lets do a dance in the middle of a store giddy. This little one was no different- and I fell in love the moment I got to snuggle him. It’s always hard for me after I leave a session- because even though we only spend a few hours together I miss those sweet little ones after I leave. I’m so lucky to get to see them again when we have our in-home viewing sessions.
It is so cool to capture a new family in their home. The way they are comfortable in their own space, that everyone can relax, is one of my favorite things about traveling to people. It’s also exciting to capture them in their environment as it is now, knowing that it will change as time passes. How cool is it that you can look back and see what your life was in that moment? I absolutely love it.
Can you believe all that hair? An amazing, happy, BEAUTIFUL baby. Even though it took a while for him to fall asleep, he was happy the whole time. I am truly blessed to have gotten to spend a few hours with him and his family.

I have to admit something…. I had to call my husband right after I met this gorgeous family to tell him just that. It makes me absolutely giddy that I have such gorgeous clients- and what tops it all off is that they are just about the most wonderful people in the world. I am so very glad that you chose me R family. I had a great time playing and laughing with all of you.
The wind worked against us first thing in the morning. We met at Red Rocks Amphitheater to start our morning session, and what was supposed to be a warm, sunny day, was a really chilly gusty one. So we headed to our second location to start- crossing our fingers that the wind would die down. Well, it was better at the second location, and we decided to play and let the kids warm up to me and the camera for a little while. We had a plan to have little Mr. W hold some balloons since he just turned one. Well…. We got him all set, tied the balloons to his belt loop, stepped away, and before I could snap 2 pictures, a gust of wind sucked all 10 balloons into the sky. Bummer. His big sister was crushed, and we were disappointed that it didn’t work out. So we are going to try balloons round 2 a little later this week!
Aren’t they beautiful?

When planning a session with a client, I always encourage them to bring items that make them “them”. Since I photograph so many children- lovies, blankies, binky’s and other comfort creatures are part of those items. Often- mom and dad want to leave this beloved possession behind- afraid it will ruin the picture. I disagree. Those are what make an image. Your baby will be too big for those security items before you know it. We aim to photograph you as you are NOW.
Your little one can’t leave the house without that superman cape around his shoulders? Your princess must always have on her Sleeping Beauty heels? Your sweet little baby needs her tigger or his taggy blanket ever dragging behind them? Bring them to our session. They are a part of your family too- no matter how threadbare, dirty, or worn they might be. After all, what would the story be like without the Velveteen rabbit?

I got to play duck-duck-goose this weekend. Actually, it usually becomes duck-duck-duck-duck-duck…..DUCK-duck-duck…. DUUUUUUUCK-duck-duck……GOOSE!, followed by running not in a circle, but FAR FAR away from the goose. At least if we’re playing playground rules. I admit though- I kinda stunk up the duck-duck-goosing. I had a injured heel and I couldn’t chase the boys. I was bummed.
Aren’t these boys too cute??? Five years old, with a new brother, cuteness galore and awesome parents. They know all about super heroes and think it’s hilarious when you tell them not to smile. They made my day.

The whole family was all about bare feet. I have to tell you- I was excited about that, because shoes are, after all, highly overrated.
Thank you G family. You are all beautiful and have blessed me.

We are only a few days away from announcing the winner of the Best of 2009! It is a close race- so be sure to vote for your favorite!
If you have children, you know how quickly they grow. The first couple of weeks after they arrive seem to drag as you adjust to less sleep and a new routine- then suddenly when it seems like you might lose your mind, they smile at you. Then someone hits the fast forward button. It gets faster with each child. Teagan has grown so quickly. We celebrated 7 weeks together yesterday. SEVEN. I feel like I was just at the hospital having her last week. Of course, I feel the same way about my 4 year old- and my parents say they feel the same way about me.
It teaches me to value each day to the deepest extent. I am blessed to be able to capture them often. I wish that I had participated in a Belly-2-Baby or First Year plan with my oldest. I have a million snapshots of her, but I wish we had gotten professional portraits every couple months for her. My younger 2 kids just kind of fell into Belly-2-Baby, and I know that someday they will love to look back in their albums made just for them. They change SO fast. SO fast.
My children and husband are my heart. I love them beyond what words can convey.
I had so much fun doing her 7 week pictures yesterday (yes, I do weekly portraits their first year– they look different every day!) I even made a flower clip to use in that pretty hair of hers- and it will be fun to use with little girls in the future.

I had SO much fun shooting the Comfy Joey Spring collection! The mommies and babies all looked beautiful and did a great job- not to mention the fact that these ring slings are STUNNING! The colors are vibrant and they are amazingly well made. I am an avid baby-wearer, but had never tried a ring sling before- and I have to tell you, after getting to try these, I think I’m sold! My 2 year old thinks they are about the coolest thing ever and has LOVED riding in them the last couple days. I think he missed being worn.

Could I have had more beautiful models? Lucky lucky me! And to top it all off The owner of Comfy Joey had an experience ring sling wearer come and help style everyone. It was wonderful to have the help and knowledge. I hope to work with Ayesha and her sling again in the future!
