I get asked a LOT for ideas for what to wear for a family session.  The one thing I have to emphatically insist is that you DO NOT match! COORDINATE!  Unless you dress the in the same outfits every day of the year, I don’t want you to match in pictures.  I want to capture you, just kicked up a notch.  I’m a T-shirt and jeans kind of gal.  So for pictures, unless we are going dressier, I wear jeans.  But instead of just a day to day t-shirt, I go get a fancy (AKA nicer than a t-shirt but still cotton and comfy) shirt, rock out some jewelry, and toss on some boots instead of my day-to-day slip ons.

If you love skirts, wear that!  Dress your kids up in something that is THEM, not matching, but tying it all together.  Pick a common thread.  Love pink?  Have pink thread through your outfits.  Your girls in dresses with pink flowers, your boys with pink ties or suspenders.  You could wear a cream colored top, and a pink necklace and heels- your hubby with a pink tie or shirt. Speaking of ties and all things amazingly adorable…. go check out The Belle and The Beaupainfully cute.

I wanted to include a few ideas of what I mean.  These are courtesy of Inspire Me Baby, but if you like ideas on what to wear, leave a comment and I will start putting together ideas every week.

Remember Belly Part 1? Well we met up again to shoot on a warmer day to feature her gorgeous dancing and yoga.  I am so inspired by her grace.  I wanted to make her keep dancing and posing just to watch.  I am also inspired to get my rear into shape!  Thank you again Shannon- you are lovely and I can’t wait to meet your little one.

I am probably one of the most blessed people in the world to get to meet such amazing, beautiful people.  Thank you so much for allowing me to capture this special season in your life.

We shot at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.  It was kind of warm in the sun, and FREEZING in the shade- but we had a great time- and I think laughing sometimes help us forget how cold we are.

Isn’t she a gorgeous?

Remember this beautiful belly?  This is the sweet baby boy behind the belly!  This little angel had a busy day the day we shot him.  He flew in from Minnesota, drove for an hour in the car, and then did the session.  Even with all that stimulation he did AMAZING!  He let me know when he didn’t like what I was doing- but as soon as he heard his Momma’s voice all was well in his world.  I could have snuggled him ALL day.  Isn’t he gorgeous??

Congratulations Brittany- he is so wonderful.

I am so blessed to have such amazing women as friends.  She is going to have 3 boys (handsome ones at that!)- and I truly believe it takes a very special woman to have all boys. Thank you so much for coming out in the cold with your boys and playing with us!

Ashley… You are so beautiful- inside and out.  I can’t wait to meet your sweet new baby boy.

There is something amazingly special about capturing portraits of an old friend.  It had been 8 years since we had seen each other- and I think we both were a little nervous we wouldn’t recognize one another.  We did though- and aside from slightly different hair styles neither had changed much (She’s still as gorgeous as ever!!).  It was neat to be able to talk about how well people are doing who we both know and grew up with- and to so easily converse.  Brittany flew in from Minnesota for our session, and I am so very glad that she did!  We debated a couple of weekends, and this one couldn’t have been a better one- for several reasons.

I had to put up this post tonight, because by tomorrow evening… Her belly will be gone and she will be holding her brand new baby boy in her arms.  Congratulations Brittany.  Here’s to a beautiful, fast, problem free delivery- and to not letting 8 years pass between visits again!

I met Stacey by chance.  I was visiting a photography board, and there was a post from a photographer that needed a birth photographer.  I had only shot a couple of births previously- so the idea of shooting the birth of another photographer’s baby was intimidating- but I sent her a message anyhow.  I figured that she would probably get lots of offers, but it didn’t hurt to try!

Then she emailed.  Stacey was having a home birth.  I had never known anyone who had had a home birth.  More intimidation.  That sounded scary! I had had my first two babies in hospitals. But she told me about the light in their house.  And how beautiful it was to have her first at home, and it wasn’t as scary to me anymore.  We decided to meet up- half hoping she would go into labor after we walked around.  I bring my camera everywhere.  Especially to places I know are pretty- like the Butterfly Pavilion.  And so I grabbed a few quick snaps of my daughter, her son, and her gorgeous belly.  I wish I had gotten more maternity style– prettiest. belly. ever.

We emailed back and forth pretty much daily at that point- and I pretty much didn’t sleep.  I kept checking my phone to make sure I didn’t miss a text, call or email.  That was my worst fear- to sleep right through her birth!  I kept praying for daylight.  PLEASE let it be day.

A week passed- then I got an email.  ”I’m contracting.  This might be it- I’ll let you know”.  Nervous butterflies.  I should be a midwife.  I love being at births.  Yes, there is a person in pain (been there, done that 3 times thankyouverymuch)- but it is a productive pain- a pain that brings the most amazing miracles into the world.  It’s beautiful.  And amazing.  I love it.   Anyhow, I waited to hear from her again- I had an appointment with my midwife that morning, so I figured it would work out perfectly to go to the midwives office then head to see them.  When I talked to Stacey while I was at my appointment… I knew it was the real deal- she couldn’t talk during contractions.

When I arrived Stacey looked gorgeous.  A woman in labor and stunning.  I was so jealous!  She had such a beautiful birth, and welcomed Amelia into the world at home.  In peace- with so much love.  It made me want to have home births.

Perfect, alert, spectacular.  And I was there to capture it. IN COLOR!  Not a lot of births get to be in color.  The lights are usually too dim- so our photos- while beautiful, are grainy and grain is beautiful in black and white!

I was extra lucky and got to shoot some newborns of her as well!  She was so awake and aware of where her mommy went the whole time I was there.  Did I mention Perfect?  She  was and is!  And that picture of Stacey holding her to her tummy?  A WEEK after she had her!  You’d never know that she was ever pregnant.

Then it was my turn to add to our family.  And Stacey was there to capture Teagan’s birth.  The photos are gorgeous- and I am so thankful she was there!

We got together just before Christmas… And here’s that little princess almost 4 months old.  Couldn’t you gobble her up??? I just could melt over all those rolls. Teagan was about 2 weeks old.  They were such different sizes- such a special picture of the two of them together.

And now she’s one.  Gorgeous, sweet, one.  I have been blessed to know you little miss Amelia!  Thank you Stacey for letting us be part of her first year.  She is a blessing as are you!
